3D-Visualization of medical volume data and multiplanar reconstruction:
In the recent years film based methods to record and visualize medical images were improved through new technologies. Revolutionary inventions like digital x-ray and computed tomography lead to the new age of medical imaging. Within the last years the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) Standard was defined and improved as an interface for medical images and networks. Global systems - PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) - established a user-friendly way to archive and share medical data through clinics and surgeries.
The front end tool exploreDICOM is a universal java based medical image viewer to handle with medical data in DICOM standard. Including basic functions like zoom, measurement and filtering of images, it was continuously improved in its functions, especially the 3D-view and the calculation and representation of Multiplanar Reconstructions (MPR). In this short presentation I will report about advancing functions of the exploreDICOM MPR-view as well as about a feasibility study leading to virtual endoscopy in the 3D-plugin, which I developed during my Master project.
